What is a Geiger Counter and What does it do?

What is a Geiger Counter?

"Geiger Counter," is usually used as a catch-all term for radiation detection equipment. However, in reality it is a very specific term for one type of measurement device, which can be put to many different purposes. When considering what kind of radiation detector to purchase, it is more important to consider the intended application for the device, rather than whether it is technically a "Geiger Counter."

A "Geiger Counter" (or Geiger-Müller counter, GM tube, halogen counter, etc) detects ionizing radiation. They are typically used to detect beta and gamma radiation, but, depending on the type, they can also detect the emission of alpha particles or even neutron radiation. Each particle or photon detected creates a pulse of current, which is then interpreted by the device as a measurement of exposure. So, while a Geiger counter can recognize the presence of different types of radiation, it cannot distinguish between them in its most basic format.

How Does it Work?

A tube filled with an inert gas, a Geiger counter works by counting electrical pulses. This happens when ionizing radiation interacts with the gas, causing it to become conductive. This creates a cascade effect where all the gas becomes briefly ionized, and is "collected" to the sides of the tube, creating one "pulse" after which the gas returns to normal until the next particle or photon of radiation hits it.

Geiger counters still prove popular and extremely effective in many different applications, especially in the roles of surface contamination detection or dose/rate measurement; however, other types of detector such as scintillation detectors are also highly effective search devices as well.
